The first line of the first chapter of this book is 'It was the opinion of a good many people that Charles Millard was "something of a dude."' I did not realize that the word 'dude' was in use over a 100 years ago at the very least. Being a child of the 80s and 90s also prevented me from learning that dude originally was a fastidious or well dressed man. It is amazing what you can learn in books. Especially when you open and read them.
